‘Harry Potter’ Actor Rupert Grint Hit With $2.3 Million Tax Bill Following Legal Battle

Rupert Grint has reportedly lost a legal battle that has left him with a significant tax bill.

The Associated Press reports that the 36-year-old Harry Potter alum had been ordered to pay up in 2019 after the U.K. tax agency His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs looked into his tax return from 2012. Grint’s bill is 1.8 million pounds, which is equivalent to nearly $2.3 million.

Per the outlet, His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs claimed that Grint had wrongly classified 4.5 million pounds in residuals from the Harry Potter movies as a capital asset as opposed to income. According to BBC News, Grint had gotten this money during the 2011-2012 year from a company that he is the sole shareholder of which manages his business.

Though Grint’s lawyers made an appeal during a 2022 hearing, it was recently dismissed by tax tribunal Judge Harriet Morgan, who ruled that the money “derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint” and is indeed, “taxable as income,” per The Independent.

DECIDER reached out to Grint’s publicists for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.

Several outlets such as The Associated Press and The Independent reported that Grint had lost another legal dispute in 2019 involving a 1 million-pound tax refund.

Grint starred in all eight of the franchise’s films as Ron Weasley. He most recently starred as Julian Pearce in Apple TV+’s Servant, which ended last March with its fourth and final season, as well as Redmond in Knock at the Cabin. He also reunited with Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, among others, in the franchise’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, which was released in January 2022.
