After ranting about the “huge wave of horny washing over” the country when the real identity of the UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect was revealed to be Luigi Mangione, Jimmy Kimmel set his sights on Mangione’s new lawyer, Thomas Dickey.
After joking that Dickey closely resembles Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, Kimmel pointed out that Dickey conducted several rather questionable interviews after Mangione lawyered up.
Dickey confirmed on CNN that people have been offering to pay for Mangione’s legal defense. When CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked if that was something Dickey would accept, the lawyer replied, “Eh nah, nah. To be honest with you, I probably wouldn’t.”
Dickey’s answer made even Kimmel laugh. “Okay so not exactly the OJ dream team we’re dealing with here,” he joked. He then threw in an impersonation of Dickey, adding, “Nah I’d rather get paid in donuts to be honest with you.”
In another interview with the press, Dickey could not remember the date of Mangione’s upcoming hearing. “He has a hearing coming up I believe it’s uh, the 20-something-eth. I can’t recall. A lot has happened today,” he said in a clip shared on Live.
Kimmel could not believe it. “Did Luigi get his lawyer at McDonalds too?” he asked.
He continued, “It’s weird that he even has a lawyer. Think about this, in this country if you get sick or you’re severely disabled, your health insurer won’t cover it, you’re out of luck. But if you do something violent to protest that, here’s your free attorney.”
The late night host added that he was very underwhelmed when he looked up the location of Dickey’s law offices in Altoona, Pennsylvania. “How is a lawyer supposed to keep you out of prison if he is working in one?” he demanded.
“And yes, the law offices of Tom M. Dickey look like they would be across the street from a Burlington Coat Factory, but that’s only because they are across the street from a Burlington Coat Factory!” he said as he showed Dickey’s offices and neighborhood on Google Maps.
But, above all, Kimmel appears baffled that so many people have come to Mangione’s defense and are even thirsting after him.
“I’ve been on TV just about nonstop for 29 years. This guy’s been in the news since Monday, [and] he has fans threatening the police? Why do I feel like if I shot somebody, even my mother would be like, ‘Lock him up! Teach him a lesson! It’s the only way he’s gonna learn,’” he joked.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
