The View can’t seem to shake its post-election blues. This morning kicked off with a discussion about democratic voters tuning out of the news after Donald Trump won his second presidential election earlier this month. While the chat began unremarkably, it soon morphed into a debate between Whoopi Goldberg and Alyssa Farah Griffin about how Americans should view Trump’s forthcoming presidency.
Goldberg, who was been very clear about her intentions to wait and see what Trump will do before “working [her]self into a lather about it,” had a very different approach from Griffin, who seemed to tone down her previously dire warnings about her former boss.
Griffin, who worked for Trump before resigning in late 2020, told the panel, “I feel a bit unburdened by what has been. I’m going to wait and see. He’s not been sworn in yet.”
Noting that she agrees with “probably 75% of his policies,” Griffin said she’ll be “all for it” if Trump carries out his campaign promises about securing the border, creating more jobs and making the cost of living more affordable.
Griffin said she thinks Trump should still be called out for offensive language or doing things “that are beyond the pale,” but said she’s “shying away” from any “apocalyptic” predictions about Trump’s second term, noting that the American system of government is “strong” and has a system of checks and balances.
“I root for America, so I root for a smart, serious Donald Trump presidency, and I root for push-back when he doesn’t do things that are smart and serious,” she said, but Goldberg was unimpressed.
“Yeah,” she replied. “I think all those things are great to dream about.”
Goldberg’s line got a round of applause from the audience and some laughter at the table, which prompted Griffin to somewhat indignantly say, “I mean, we can take bubble baths for four years and or we can just engage in the process!”
To that, Goldberg told Griffin, “this process was handled without me,” before addressing viewers and saying, “I listen to people make fun of, you know, it’s not about race, it’s not about misogyny. It is for me! Because that’s how you see me first.”
Goldberg then clarified that she wasn’t attempting to call out Griffin, as she said she understood “all the things” he co-host wanted to see Trump become. Still, she noted, “Now that he has been given carte blanche, I’m not going to waste a lot of time on what he might do. I’m gonna wait because I need to see what he will do, so that I know what I’m going to do.”
