Trump border czar Tom Homan slams San Diego over 'super sanctuary' policy, vows to try to thwart it

Incoming border czar Tom Homan is slamming San Diego’s new “super sanctuary” policy as “10 times worse’’ than the previous reg protecting illegal migrants from the feds — and is vowing to try to thwart it.

The “disastrous” new resolution — which was adopted in a 3-1 vote by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors in California last week — now forces local cops to obtain a warrant signed by a state or federal judge before they can contact ICE over an illegal migrant busted for a crime, according to NewsNation.

Local law enforcement was previously restricted from contacting the feds if they found out someone’s immigration status was illegal — and this new law extends that protection to include even those here illegally who are arrested for a crime, unless a warrant is issued.

ICE can’t even be notified of an accused criminal illegal migrant’s release from custody under the policy without a warrant.

Homan, during an interview with The Post on Friday about his recent meeting with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, said the policy is “10 times worse” than California’s existing sanctuary state law.

He recalled telling Adams that if leaders “cross the line, we’re gonna make an example out of somebody because we’re talking about public safety threats and they’re going to prevent me from getting my hands on a public safety threat and if they cross the line, I’m gonna seek prosecution.

“I’m not gonna be the one prosecuting, the US Attorney will, but I will try it because I think it’s worth doing,” Homan added.

The San Diego County Sheriff, Kelly Martinez, has already come out against her county’s new policy, saying she won’t comply.

“While protecting the rights of undocumented immigrants is crucial, it is equally important to ensure that victims of crimes are not overlooked or neglected in the process,” Martinez said. “Victims include undocumented individuals – these vulnerable individuals express to me that their legal status is used as a weapon against them when offenders from their community victimize them.

“We must protect the well-being of individuals, including those who are undocumented, which requires a careful approach that upholds the principles of justice, fairness, and compassion for all individuals involved,” she added.

The sole dissenting vote to the latest resolution, San Diego Supervisor Jim Desmond, said he’s already reached out to the Trump transition team to fight the “disastrous” policy.

San Diego has recently become the top region for crossings along the entire southern US border.

That can largely be attributed to Texas’ tightening of its border controls and California’s state sanctuary laws, said Manny Bayon, National Border Patrol Council president for the San Diego sector, to The Post earlier this year.

“Since Texas Governor Abbott has implemented Operation Lone Star securing the Texas/Mexico border, the National Border Patrol Council has seen a significant increase in migrant traffic entering Arizona [and] California, primarily California since its a sanctuary state,” Bayon said.

Even as the Biden administration tried to crack down on illegal crossings with new restrictions to quickly remove border-crossers, it gave border agents in San Diego instructions to exempt citizens from more than a 100 countries from being removed because their home countries won’t accept deportations.
