Here’s some news that’s sure to be pop-u-lar: The Wicked movie is coming to digital next week, just in time for New Year’s Eve.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, this film adaptation of Stephen Schwartz’s Tony-winning musical has been a long time coming. Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, before she turned evil. Glinda the Good Witch, aka Galinda (played by Ariana Grande), is key to Elphaba’s villain origin story. Before they were enemies, they were the best of friends.
Wicked was more than a box office hit—it was one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. So far, the movie has earned over $585.5 million at the worldwide box office, and that number is still going up. So is it surprising that Universal is releasing Wicked on digital platforms after just over one full month in theaters? Not really. In fact, most Universal titles have been pushed “premium” video-on-demand after just over two weeks in theaters. The fact that Wicked got more than a month is a sign that the studio recognizes it as a hit.
If you haven’t yet had a chance to see the film, don’t be fooled by the title—which was changed from Wicked: Part 1 to simply Wicked—this two-hour-and-40-minute long movie only covers the first half of the wildly successful Broadway musical.
With that knowledge in mind, here’s what to know about the Wicked movie digital release and when we expect to see Wicked streaming on Peacock.
Where to watch the Wicked movie on streaming:
Beginning on Tuesday, December 31 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time, (which is also December 30 at 9 p.m. Pacific Time) the Wicked movie will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the film costs $29.99 to buy a digital copy, and $24.99 to rent. If you rent the movie, you’ll have 48 hours to watch the movie after hitting “play.”
Wicked will also release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray™ and DVD on February 4, 2025. Both the digital and the DVD release will come with upwards of three hours of bonus content, including deleted scenes, extended scenes, the sing-along theatrical cut, and more.
Wicked is not yet streaming on any subscription streaming services, but we do expect to see Wicked streaming on Peacock soon.
When will Wicked be streaming on Peacock?
Wicked‘s streaming release date on Peacock has not yet been announced, but we know that Wicked will stream on Peacock eventually because it is a Universal movie, and Peacock is the streaming service owned by Universal. All the new Universal theatrical movies end up streaming on Peacock, though the wait period has varied by title.
Another Universal release, Twisters, began streaming on Peacock on November 15, which was about four months after the film opened in theaters, and about three months after the film released on digital.
If Wicked follows a similar release pattern, you might see the movie streaming on Peacock around late March 2025.
This is all speculation. Given the hype around the movie, it’s possible Universal will opt to keep the movie off of Peacock for longer. If you want to watch Wicked movie right away, you can catch the movie in theaters right now, or buy or rent the film online starting on Tuesday.
